Finding a leak can be stressful, especially if water is actively dripping, spraying, or spreading. The first goal is to limit damage and keep the situation from getting worse until the problem can be checked
Shut off the water if you can.
If the leak is at a sink, toilet, washing machine, refrigerator, or water heater, there may be a nearby shutoff valve. If water is spraying or spreading and you cannot find a local shutoff, you may need to shut off the main water supply.
Move items away from the water.
Move towels, rugs, boxes, cleaning supplies, or anything valuable out of the wet area if it is safe to do so.
Use towels or a bucket to limit spread.
This may help protect flooring, cabinets, and nearby rooms while you wait for help.
Avoid using the fixture.
Do not keep flushing, running water, or using the appliance if it is causing more leaking.
Take photos or a short video.
Send a close-up and a wider photo so we can better understand where the leak is and what may be involved.
Watch for electrical hazards.
If water is near outlets, electrical panels, appliances, or cords, stay clear and treat it as urgent.
